As a child, snow always used to make me feel comforted, protected from all outside harm. The first snow would come in the night and it would fill me with so much joy and peace. A white blanket to cover all sorrow, all worry, even if only for a season. Snow was truly magical for me. As I've gotten older, I've struggled to hold on to that magical wonder, but there are days where I can still feel that little twinge of hope...those moments where that comfort from snow feels real again like it did when I was a child.
November was an incredibly hard and scary month personally and I asked Niki one night as a joke "why don't we write a Christmas song? Not like, a 'Christmas Christmas' song, but just like...a winter song for people struggling." And literally 5 minutes later she comes to me with a melody and full lyrics that made my eyes water.
We decided to call it Winter Vela. Vela is a constellation only seen in the winter skies, part of the sails of a ship manned by Jason and the Argonauts. Vela means "sails" in Latin and we thought it was pretty and fitting. Winter Vela, winter sails. This is the first full song out of our newly updated and renovated SHEFREAK STUDIO and it is our gift to you this season. Listen to it when you need peace, comfort, and consoling. It has been an impossible year, but we're still here, you're still here. And we're right there with you.
